SLSF 65000-65099 Darby built gondola

Katy ordered 50 specially equipped gondolas from Darby Corporation (a minority builder of freight cars located in Kansas City, KS) in 1966. Cars were delivered in July 1966 and painted in the then current Barriger red with silver roofs. Cars were lettered BKTY 21450-21499

Cars were used in plate and coil steel service. Some cars were later equipped with extended sides, covers raised and painted green with yellow lettering. Please see the Morning Sun book: Frisco/Katy Color Guide to Freight Equipment (page 30) for prototype photos of these cars.
