Prototype
decks take a beating

Update: "Drybrush"
weather your decks

Weathering
the decks is easy. We use 70% isopropyl alcohol with some drops
of india ink added. Add a few drops to the alcohol, shake,
and test to see if the color is dark enough for you. We use
about 1/2 of an eye dropper of ink per 16oz. bottle. On the
right is A-West Weather-It. On the left is Hunt Speedball Super
Black
India Ink (product #3338).

India Ink (product #3338).

This
effect is achieved by weathering the deck heavily and then
lightly sanding
the deck with 150 grit sandpaper. Prototype
flatcar decks that have been exposed to years of weather tend
to have a silvery gray look.
Adhering
your decks to the cars Contact
cement works very well but be careful not to get any of it
on the top of the deck or on the sides of the car. Apply a
thin layer of contact cement on the car and on the bottom of
the deck. Some brands of contact cement say to leave both surfaces
alone until the glue is not tacky anymore, then press the parts
together. We like glue that bond strong like contact cement
but can be used while still wet. This allows for some movement
in case you need to readjust the placement of the deck slightly.
Walthers Goo is a good example of this. Just be sure to place
some weight equally around the deck until the glue dries. Contact
cement works well for adhering decks to your cars. This brands
directions say the apply to both sides, press parts together,
then allow 30 minutes drying time. We
had one customer recommend silicone as a good adhesive. We
have not tried it yet however.
Jaeger
HO Products uses our decks on their custom built, ready to
run cars, and they use white glue.
